FINDING THE OTHER HUMANS

An ancient jawbone in a Tibetan cave, a tiny molar in Laos, a femur in the Philippines. This series of small and seemingly unrelated discoveries is radically changing the understanding of our revolution history – and challenging our notion of what is means to be human. A fascinating new story, however, is emerging. Recent discoveries, illuminated by stunning advances in paleoanthropology and ancient DNA analysis, reveal that modern humans emerged from Africa tens of thousands of years earlier than previously believed. Other features in this issue include:

• A look at an abandoned nuclear-powered military base under the Greenland ice sheet during the Cold War

• NGS Explorer Laurent Ballesta and his deep-sea diving team’s attempt to solve the mystery of at least 1,000 strange rings in the deep clear waters of Corsica Island

• Photographer Ingo Arndt’s lens zooms into the hidden world of the European red wood ants
